Due to an impending retirement, University of Florida Health - Shands Hospital (UF Health) has retained Helbling to conduct an executive search for a Director of Design & Construction Services (Director). For this role, UF Health is seeking a highly-experienced individual who will continue to focus on quality, growth, and sophistication to better serve the community. UF Health has seen tremendous growth over the past 15+ years and will continue to expand, update, and renovate existing facilities to ensure the best in class environment for doctors, patients, and their families. UF Health is a private, not-for-profit organization affiliated with the University of Florida, and is located Gainesville, FL. It is made up of two main hospitals and numerous outpatient and MOB facilities consisting of 3M+ total square feet. 

UF Health is one of the Southeast’s premier teaching hospitals and the state’s leading medical referral center, and the institution consistently earns top-50 rankings among the U.S. News & World Report’s America’s Best Hospitals. Its programs have achieved “Magnet” designation from the American Nursing Credentialing Center. The most prestigious honor for nursing excellence, Magnet status is achieved by less than 1 percent of the nation’s acute care hospitals. 

UF Health includes state designated Level I trauma center, Level III neonatal intensive care unit, regional burn center and emergency air and ground transport programs that service adult, pediatric and neonatal patients.  Areas of emphasis include: cancer, neurology and neurosurgery, cardiovascular, pediatrics, and transplantation.

The Director is responsible for the management of all design and construction activities supporting the hospital and clinics, encompassing management and oversight of service and trade including standards, design content, architectural and engineering services, assurance and quality control, CODE compliance, competitiveness, job site/worker safety, and all aspects of healthcare design and construction. The Director oversees a department of approximately 12 individuals and is 1 of 3 Directors that make up the facilities executive management team, which also includes the Vice President, Facilities.

  • B.S in Construction Management, Engineering, or Architecture.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of architecture or construction management experience.
  • Combined knowledge of both healthcare design and construction services is necessary.
  • Knowledge of hospital codes and standards, and a general knowledge of all phases of commercial design and construction is required.
  • Highly organized with excellent communications skills.
