San Jose State University (SJSU) has retained Helbling & Associates to conduct an executive search to secure an Associate Vice President, Facilities Development & Operations (AVP). The AVP is the principal facilities administrator at SJSU. Reporting to the Vice President for Administration and Finance / Chief Financial Officer, this position is responsible for leading and directing the strategic operational and developmental planning of all campus facilities to support the mission of the university. The AVP provides vision and leadership for Facilities Development and Operations, which includes the following departments: Planning, Design, and Construction; Maintenance and Operations; Environmental Health and Safety; as well as the Financial and Administrative Services unit supporting the needs of the department.

As the university's senior facilities administrator, the AVP is responsible for the successful operation, maintenance, and development of the university's physical plant. The AVP will play a key role in establishing and directing the strategic goals of the department and will ensure operational objectives are achieved. The university occupies 19 blocks in downtown San Jose, as well as 62 acres that make up the South Campus housing the Spartan Stadium and athletic fields. In total, the facilities inventory comprises of approximately 6M SF of buildings on approximately 160 acres of land.

The AVP engages collaboratively with campus administration and the campus community to provide superior customer-focused services while advancing the university's goals. The AVP plays a significant role in creating the campus master plan and the multi-year capital outlay program as the university continues to go through a major facelift. These new and renovated projects complement existing campus services and develop an enhanced and integrated student-friendly campus environment.

The new AVP needs to be creative and have the vision to spearhead an efficient transformation of SJSU into a modern campus.

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Architecture, Construction, or related field.
  • Master's Degree preferred.
  • Ten (10) years of progressively responsible relevant experience including at least seven (7) years in a senior-level leadership role in a large and complex Facilities Department (either Operations and Maintenance or Planning, Design, & Construction).
  • Successful completion of multiple large-scale capital projects.
  • Higher education environment experience.
  • Demonstrated experience building and sustaining a high performing, service-focused organization.
  • Experience with strategic planning and collective bargaining.

Abilities to:

  • Lead a large service department in exemplary customer service.
  • Manage a large and diverse workforce in a collective bargaining environment.
  • Thorough knowledge of administrative, maintenance, and construction operations, including HVAC, electrical utility systems, and energy management programs for large complex facilities.
  • Identify and determine the cause of problems; develop and present recommendations for improvement of established processes and practices; and initiate and implement plans to solve problems.
  • Comply with reporting requirements as it relates to construction management policy and procedures and financial reporting.
  • Work collaboratively with campus constituents.
  • Develop and monitor metrics to ensure the organization is operating efficiently and effectively serving campus needs while meeting budgetary parameters.
  • Administer effective environmental health and safety program, and remain current on compliance and safety standards.
  • Effectively respond to the needs of the constituency of a major metropolitan university.
  • Work with all levels of the campus community to solicit feedback and improve services. 
  • Ensure budget integrity of the FD&O service group.
  • Be proactive to form ideas and share them.
  • Act as advocate for staff.
  • Promote collaboration with other departments within facilities management and university-wide.
  • Provide a vision for the department.
  • Write reports and business correspondence.
  • Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions and to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with multiple abstract and concrete variables.
