Robert Morris University (RMU) has retained Helbling, a ZRG company to conduct an executive search to secure a Chief Advancement Officer.


Position Summary

The Chief Advancement Officer establishes and cultivates relationships to expand, strengthen, and diversify a stable donor base while managing and motivating a professional staff. This position cultivates both internal and external relationships in order to implement and manage campaigns and strategies for major gifts from individuals, foundations, and corporations. The Chief Advancement Officer will provide strategic leadership and development of University sponsorships including but not limited to: RMU Island Sports Center, University websites, University publications, University events, academic programs, and assisting with naming opportunities for University buildings/facilities. The Chief Advancement Officer will also be responsible for building and maintaining alumni relations, including planning and oversight of alumni events.

Essential Duties / Functions 

  • Management and professional development of University fundraising staff and fundraising programs.
  • Management of budgets related to University fundraising programs.
  • Organizes, leads, directs, develops, and motivates a professional fundraising staff.
  • Responsible for the management, growth, and meeting of annual capital goals in all aspects of University sponsorships.
  • Responsible for the management, growth, and meeting of annual capital goals in all aspects of fundraising including but not limited to the Annual Fund, Senior Class Gift, Major Gift, and Capital Campaigns.
  • Responsible for University fundraising goals.
  • Responsible for alumni relations and events.
  • Responsible for the development of “Reunion Giving” and “Class Agent” goals (annual goals).
  • Represents the University at various community and University events and is extensively involved in the local community.
  • Establishes strong relationships with local companies, institutions, and organizations and drives student outplacement and workforce development initiatives.
  • Strategically implements data analytics, including mapping of and outreach to alumni base.

Requirements

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Campaign management and/or business development experience required; proven ability to think strategically, plan effectively, and manage productively to achieve multiple high-priority goals.

  • Commitment to integrating broad engagement with alumni and other constituencies with an efficient and effective fundraising program.

  • Demonstrated ability to provide management, leadership, thought, and strategic direction collaboratively with enthusiasm for the mission of the University.

  • Communication style that is open and direct; ability to communicate effectively and persuasively in oral and written form. 

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to influence and maintain a diverse donor population.

  • Experience managing a professional staff; ability to motivate and develop a team of development professionals; ability to maintain confidentiality.

  • Strong interpersonal skills in order to work effectively and collaboratively with team members, diverse internal and external constituents, and others in a results-based environment.

  • A team player, utilizing and developing relations within and outside the University, which will enhance the ability to maximize the attraction of resources.

  • Ability to improve and refine existing programs and develop new programs aimed at attracting resources.


Experience, Education and License / Certification

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; Advanced Degree is preferred.

  • Experience Required: Advancement or business development professional with a minimum of 7 years of significant professional fundraising and/or business development experience. Demonstrated record of success may be shown by securing significant major gifts (including planned gifts and special fundraising gifts) and/or creating and cultivating successful client relationships.
