Hopkins School has retained Helbling, a ZRG company to conduct an executive search to secure a Director of Facilities.

Position Overview 

Reporting to the Chief Financial and Operating Officer, the Director of Facilities is responsible for oversight of the School’s physical plant, including maintenance of all buildings, grounds, athletic fields, vehicles, and other equipment.  The Director of Facilities will provide operational, logistical, strategic, and hands-on support to the School in all matters relating to the maintenance and operation of the physical plant.

Position Description

  • Manage, motivate, and evaluate all of the facilities management departments in order to maintain the integrity of the School’s physical assets;
  • Responsible for all maintenance programs and services performed by the maintenance staff and independent contractors;
  • Oversee the work order system and ensure appropriate response times;
  • Monitor the safety, function and appearance of all campus buildings, grounds, and equipment;
  • Develops and manages the departmental operating and capital budgets in conjunction with the Chief Financial and Operating Officer;
  • Develops, issues and reviews RFP’s for competitive bids / proposal for work performed by outside vendors;
  • Ensures all buildings, grounds, vehicles, and equipment are compliant with all required permits, approvals, regulations and licenses. Obtains / renews permits, approvals, and licenses, as necessary;
  • Organizes, supervises, and assigns staffing for the set up and breakdown of school events;
  • Supervise the work of independent contractors engaged to perform capital project work and new construction for the school, report on the progress to the Chief Financial and Operating Officer, and in consultation with the Chief Financial and Operating Officer, coordinate work sequence and schedules, attend job meetings, and troubleshoot problems;
  • Supervise the performance of independent contractors engaged to perform certain services for the school, e.g., landscaping, and custodial services;
  • Coordinates activities with the Community Safety department to ensure the safety of faculty, staff, students, and visitors;
  • Communicate with the Hopkins community regarding plant issues and acts a spokesperson for facility management;
  • Performs other duties as required and/or assigned.

Requirements

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Architecture, Facilities Management, Construction Management, or a combination of education and work experience in related field;
  • Minimum of eight years of experience managing facilities, preferably in an educational setting with supervisory experience;
  • Knowledge of building codes, blueprints and safety and environmental regulations;
  • Excellent people management and team development skills
  • Technical proficiency with operations management software and automated building systems;
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written;
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail;
  • Ability to work both independently and to collaborate as a member of a team;
  • Ability to balance institutional and individual needs in accordance with the mission of the school;
  • Must successfully pass a background check and possess a valid and safe driving record.
